Simply put, electromagnetic radiation is energy that travels through space. The range of the various types of radiation is depicted on the Electromagnetic Spectrum and can be described by frequency and wavelength. The section of the spectrum that we can see, are the colors that make up visible light (at wavelengths of about 400-700nm). Our eyes perceive each color at each different wavelength. Most light we see is a mix of all the colors together (white light), unless something is done to separate it, for example, a prism, or water droplets and a rainbow. However, when we see an object, white light is separated differently. The object itself is absorbing every color and reflecting back to us, the color we see and name. The green leaves of a tree appear green because it is reflecting green and absorbing everything else! When an object is white, it's reflecting everything back and when an object is black, it's absorbing every color!
